From article at theathletic.com
Army coach Jeff Monken has been running the under-center triple option for 26 years. He's scrapping it this spring due to NCAA rules restricting cut blocks. The rules committee insists it has data showing injury risks.
Rule was changed prior to '22 season. Will other traditional option teams begin to follow suit?

Will other traditional option teams begin to follow suit? I doubt Davidson will change. What do you think?

I think the rule change affected their ability to get to the edge quite a bit last year. I also believe it will greatly impact recruiting, particularly the slot position.

Davidson will be fine. We don't cut block with our linemen. The slots have to engage now just like last year. I think it takes a few home run plays outside and makes them 8-10 yard gains due to the fact that the outside defenders can recover and still help tackle down field.
Personally I think this rule can lead to more injuries. All teams' backs must now block huge linebackers downfield who now have an incentive to just run full speed to engage with offensive backs or slots blocking down field. The smaller backs now face 220+ lbs LB's running at full speed with no threat of a cut. Football now has no way for smaller player to level the playing field. Bigger, stronger now has all the incentive.

Not sure is this is good or bad for Marist when we play Army in 2025.

Coach Monken may also be doing this to improve his stock. He has interviewed for a few jobs only to be skipped because he is running the behind center option. If he can show he can run the option from the shotgun and sprinkle in some passes, he might get a crack at a different program.
