These two schools will be joining Marist's conference, but not in football.
BTW, how did Merrimack draw 13k fans to its last home game? They have a 4k stadium.

Merrimack is not named for a Comfederate ironclad, although the school is young enough to have been named for it. Carl Yastrzemski graduated from there.
Sacred Heart is in the same city/area as Fairfield U. The Sports Marketing Director must tell the President every year, "This name is killing us. There has to be another acceptable name for the school."

Trivia: Among Sacred Heart's alumni is former college quarterback (and SNL performer) Kevin Nealon. Nealon played at Fairfield as a graduate student.

Technically, the Merrimack was neither Confederate, nor ironclad. The captured remains of the frigate USS Merrimack were rebuilt to create the CSS Virginia, which featured metal cladding. As for the Merrimack football game, maybe they had an extra 9,000 people watching it on TV from Sacred Heart's stadium.

Well...it was homecoming so maybe they squeezed in another 10,000 fans. I doubt that so I will opine that it is a misprint and whoever entered the attendance figure threw a "1" in before the 3647 in error.
