I predict my 0-3 Toreros not only win the PFL but their first playoff game too. Rumors are they bring the full roster for league play, they have been admirably scrappy to date, and the league seems to be in a down year.

You mean third playoff game?

Doesn't he mean USD wins their first playoff game at the end of this season? (i know they've won 2 playoff games in the past.)
You have to win your first playoff game. They won't let you play a second game if you don't win your first.

I mean first playoff game this year. First round matchups for PFL are usually manageable.

At the start of the season, I thought St Thomas would win the PFL and Davidson would be the playoff representative. After today's USD at Davidson game, I haven't changed my mind. Davidson is good and getting better. And Davidson doesn't play the Tommies.

Davidson did look great. They should win out for sure.

Should win out for sure? I wouldn't go that far. Davidson might win out, might lose one. I don't think they'll lose two Pioneer games.

What's the story behind Sergent leaving the Drake game?

I don't know. I don't think it mattered. We aren't good. Great Drake win.

On the Drake board, a fan reports that he was told by a Torero football dad that USD has not practiced defending the Hail Mary. Take that tidbit with a grain of salt.

791 fans watched the Drake San Diego game. Many of them were Drake people. I know USD has a poor record, but why such lousy attendance?

791 fans watched the Drake San Diego game. Many of them were Drake people. I know USD has a poor record, but why such lousy attendance? Even if we were 6-0 going into that game, it's likely there would have still been more Drake fans in attendance. We consistently had low attendance, even during the peak of our success. It's a challenge to attract crowds to lower-level sports in a major city with numerous entertainment options, especially when we're the only Division I football program west of Iowa that doesn't offer scholarships and SDSU down the street. Even San Diego State, with 63 FBS scholarships, struggles to fill a brand-new 30,000-seat stadium, despite having over 100,000 alumni living in the city. Interestingly, a second-year professional women's soccer team managed to sell out the same venue three or four times. To make USD football a more significant attraction, it's crucial to garner national attention. However, we won't likely become a major draw until they start awarding full-ride scholarships. Even with scholarships, it would still be a challenging endeavor.

I think the Pioneer teams have a great product but the various administrations must learn how to sell it. Tickets are typically in the 15-20 dollar range compared to the bigger programs costing 30-100+ bucks. We have great student-athletes from historical colleges and I always thought we should push the "Field of Dreams" approach. College football played for the love of the game and tradition vs NIL and mega bucks. People go back to Fenway and Wrigley field to see the Green Monster and Ivy as much as the ball game. I would reach out to the top drawing AAA baseball teams and borrow their marketing approach. It would be great to get all PFL home attendance up above the 5000 per game. The league should be proactive too. It was not bright to schedule a St Thomas vs Drake game on Drakes fall break weekend.
Improve the game day experience and I think more fans will come. I think the casual PFL fan will come for a fun afternoon. Most of the fans at the Davidson games know little about scholarship limits, NIL, league realignment etc. The fans on this board do but our greater audience might be the fans who would be interested in a halftime mascot race and stay to cheer the team.
